How do I unlearn words from the spelling dictionary?

Let's say that you write a text about someone with the incredibly attractive name "Magnus". The name is underlined in Pages as incorrectly spelt, if you type in English. To add the name to your spelling dictionary, you may simply right-click (ctrl-click) on it and select "Learn Spelling" from the menu, and Pages will from now on accept the spelling.

Now, assume that by mistake the word you right-clicked was "Nagnus". To tell Pages that you made a mistake that should be forgotten, you right-click the word and this time select "Unlearn Spelling" from the menu.

This technique applies to TextEdit as well.

In older versions of Apple's software, you could unlearn words from the Spelling dialogue box, but with current versions, the way to go is right-clicking.

I DON'T HAVE THE 'UNLEARN' OR 'FORGET' BUTTON?!
I've been trying to remove an incorrect word forever now, and everything says to use one of these, but I can't. I'm frustrated and distraught, please help.

There is no button. You right-click on the word and choose unlearn from the menu.

Note that you only can unlearn words that you have added yourself. You cannot remove the word "hello" from the English dictionary for example.

If you have spelling set to "All" (languages), Pages will accept both "colour" and "color", both "adresse" and "address". If you want to be sure that you get only get one of the alternatives, you have to choose a dictionary that contains only one of the words, like the English (US) for "color", British English for "colour" and so on. French for "adresse".

If you're using 10.5, you can also use the 'Dictionary Cleaner' preference pane to edit your user dictionary with a simple GUI. You can edit individual dictionaries for each language.
Just Google the application name and you should find it

I still don't have the "UNLEARN" button. There is no button on there. I accidentally added the word "Massachuttes" to my Pages dictionary and I can't get rid of it.

Steven,

There should not be any button. Please, read the entries above one more time. If it still does not work, could you tell us which version of Pages and which version of Mac OS X you are using, and what language you have selected in the Inspector, please?

I understand because I do not have the unlearn comment on my menu as well. I right click and there is no unlearn that pops up above never hyphenate. Any other suggestions?

O.K., it was hard for me to figure it out, but I too did not have the option to unlearn the word, not even in the menu. I have pages '08.
However, if I need the word to be proofread, e.g: its not capitalized after a full stop; and then I go to proofread, when I get to the word, I can left-click it, and then I can select unlearn!

I have version 3.0.3 and I when I ctrl+click UNLEARN is not an option for me. I also tried to go into the spellcheck itself to remove a word i misspelled and accidentally added but it would not allow me to do that. Any suggestions?

Sometimes I accidentally type something like "go tit" instead of "got it," and I would like to REMOVE "tit" from my dictionary so that it will get highlighted when I make this mistake. Is there no way to remove a correctly spelled word form the dictionary?

Thank you!

Hi Barry. I'm pretty sure you cannot remove words from the built in dictionary - at least not in a clean way.

What you could do is to play around. Try going to the preferences and autocorrect "tit" to "asdfasfd". Then it will at least be visible as a typo.

You will run into problems next time you try to write about birds of the Paridae family of course, but you may not do that very often.

Another one with no "unlearn" button, ... oh, excuse me, no "unlearn" entry in the contextual menu. By mistake, I had typed "knowledgable" (correct spelling: knowledgEable), but spelling correction suggested "knswledgable", which is not a word in any of my installed languages. So I assume I added this mistyped word by mistake at some point, I "corrected" my typo with "knswledgable" and the tried to unlearn that. But no go. Mac OS 10.5.9, tried in TextEdit, Safari 4 and Pages 09.

Thanks for the tip, I have some mistypes added to the dictionary which pop up first when I want to type a couple of names. Thanks for this post.
