Can Pages create epub files?

Yes! From version 9.0.4 released in August 2010.

With the advent of iBook and the iPad, the epub file format is getting more useful, and luckily Apple released the functionality. This is one of the few major points where Pages is distinctly superior to MS Word.

Instructions, recommendation (and limitations) can be found at Apple's support site.

ePub export support is welcome indeed, as the current state of such software was, until now, pretty poor. With luck, Apple will even make the full process of publishing to the iBooks Store a humane and pleasant one. Certainly, a template and a built in export for local use are the crucial first step.

Alas, with Pages 4.0.4 it seems that Tiger support is at an end. Only Leopard and Snow Leopard can run the update. I still use my 12" PowerBook for writing, which runs best in Tiger. Naturally, I can always take my finished work to another Mac and export that way, but this iWork update also includes bug fixes which, apparently, won't be coming to the older software. Strange to turn off support before a full major release.
